dx: otitis media

shortly after arriving at our campsite last evening, we made the decision to come back to avon for a short trip to the ER. abram starting screaming about 4:15pm and from what we could tell it seemed like it was his ears hurting. we decided since the doctor's office was closed and it was a holiday weekend, we would just give him some tylenol and go ahead and leave for mccormick's creek. he's had numerous ear infections and has never seemed too bothered by them, so we assummed a dose of tylenol with subsequent doses every 4 hours would do the job. well, by 8pm it was apparent that the tylenol and/or motrin would not be enough. he's never been that upset for that long and with nothing being open or nearby, i left the campsite at 8:15pm to drive to clarian west. because abram can't really explain to us what hurts, we were assumming it was his ears and we were right. the doc sent us away with an antibiotic and some ear drops to numb the pain. by 11:15pm he was sleeping soundly in his crib at home. as nurses we always preach about not using the ER as a doctor's office, but what do you do when your child has been screaming for 4 hours?!now it's friday morning and it's still raining...the boys are stuck in the travel trailor til the rain stops and i'm gonna keep abram at home for his nap then head back down. hopefully the rain will stop long enough to set up the tent and enjoy the rest of the weekend! happy independence day!!!
